Listen to the New Giraffe Tongue Orchestra Song “Blood Moon”
About a month ago we got to hear the first song from Giraffe Tongue Orchestra — which features The Dillinger Escape Plan’s Ben Weinman, Mastodon’s Brent Hinds, Alice in Chains’ William DuVall, ex-The Mars Volta’s Thomas Pridgen and others — after what seemed like hearing about the band FOR-EVVEERRRRRR. The track, “Crucifixion,” had the unmistakable imprints of both Mastodon and Dillinger Escape Plan yet sounded like neither, with DuVall’s voice bringing an entirely new element to the table as well.
Now we get to hear another new jam called “Blood Moon” via BBC Radio 1’s Rock Show with Daniel P Carter. You can stream the episode on which the song appears here, and you can skip to roughly the 33:50 mark to hear it.
My first take? I like it! It’s not unlike the first track the band released in that it has elements of its members day job bands but doesn’t sound quite like any of them, and it’s also got a vibe entirely its own, like a chilled-out, more lounge-y version of all of them combined. While I enjoyed the track, I’m not head over heels in love with it just yet, but I’m very curious to see how this sound plays out over an entire album once I get to spend some time with it.
The band’s debut album, Broken Lines, will be released September 23 on Weinman’s own Party Smasher Inc.
