James Hetfield Appeared on American Dad as Himself (Sort Of)
While Family Guy will always be what he’s remembered for, Seth Macfarlane really got me with American Dad. Rather than cutaways and constant pop culture references, American Dad has outlandish humor, biblical black magic, and a bisexual alien gadabout who takes on the persona of any costume he wears. It’s fucking hilarious; go watch it if you haven’t.
Anyway, I bring this up because Metallica frontman James Hetfield recently appeared on the show as himself… kind of. Hetfield voiced a water polo coach named James Hetfield, who claims he’s not James Hetfield from Metallica even though he makes constant references to the band and some of Metallica’s music is used in the episode. It’s cool that Hetfield was down to do this, though not surprising. If you’re willing to perform Adele with your teenage daughter and pretend to be a zombie for a video game, you’re probably okay with voicing a water polo coach who also happens to be exactly like you.
