“Twelve Months in a Basement:” Watch This Documentary about the Writing Process of Baroness’s New Album Purple

Baroness Purple

The most encouraging part of this documentary video about the making of Baroness’s forthcoming new album Purple? The fact that, despite all their success — and the fact that John Baizley is the only original member (although Pete Adams basically qualifies as “original” at this point) — the four members of the band still get in a room together and write collaboratively, rather than one or two members bringing finished demos to rehearsal for everyone else to learn. THAT’S how the best fucking records are made, and it’s awesome to know that Baroness haven’t let the pressures of being in a full-time band rob them of the true creative process.

And Baroness had a LOT of forces working against them at the time: a massive, nearly year-long tour that took them around the world; two new band members to break in; the pressure of following up the magnificent Yellow & Green double-album; and all that after having survived a horrific, near-death bus accident. The members of Baroness talk about all of those issues (and more) in this six-minute clip, detailing the 12-month process of writing Purple.

Check it out below, and be sure to watch the first Purple documentary video Baroness released, in which Baizley talks more about recovering from the accident regrouping for the new album, and recording.

Watch the video for the first single from Purple, “Chlorine & Wine.” Purple comes out December 18 via the band’s own newly formed label, Abraxan Hymns. Pre-order packages the record are available now here, on iTunes,Amazon and Google Play. The band hits the road in Decemeber; get dates here.
