Slipknot’s Corey Taylor Ranks the Band’s Discography from Best to Worst
Although it shouldn’t really have any bearing on your own appreciation of the work, it’s always interesting to hear what an artist thinks of his or her own output.
To that end, Noisey recently asked Slipknot vocalist Corey Taylor to rank the band’s discography, from best to worst. You should really read the full article to get Taylor’s explanations as to why he listed Slipknot’s records in this particular order, but if you’d just like to glance at the list…
- Slipknot
- .5: The Gray Chapter
- Iowa
- Vol. 3: The Subliminal Verses
- All Hope is Gone
Which is interesting! I would have guessed that Taylor would hold Vol. 3 in much higher regard, given that that was when Slipknot kinda-sorta turned into Stone Sourer. I also understand that he has some sentimental attachment to the group’s eponymous debut, but not putting Iowa at the top of the list seems a little nutty to me.
Just for shits and giggles, my version of the list would be:
- Iowa — Fucking bonkers album that convinced me Slipknot were worth my attention
- Vol. 3: The Subliminal Verses — I totally understand some fans’ complaint about this record (see above re: Stone Sourer), but I really admire that the band took so many risks and made something so different at a point when releasing Return to Iowa probably would have sold just as well and been less divisive.
- Slipknot — The first time I heard this, I thought it was nu-metal garbage. I still wish it had fewer dated elements from that era (rapping, turntables, etc.), but it’s grown on me a lot over the years.
- .5: The Gray Chapter — Just read my review.
- All Hope is Gone — Easily Slipknot’s weakest offering. I can’t even remember the last time I listened to this.
Of course, that’s just my opinion — and, like Taylor’s own assessment, it doesn’t really mean anything!
So: how would YOU order Slipknot’s oeuvre, quality-wise? Sound off in the comments section below. Don’t forget to belittle anyone whose own tastes are different from yours. Have fun!!!
