Devin Townsend is Writing a Symphony
Having now conquered pretty much every conceivable variation of rock music, it would appear that Devin Townsend is now turning his attention to another genre of music altogether. In a new interview with Kaaos TV (below), Townsend reveals (transcription courtesy of Heavy Blog is Heavy):
“I’m writing a symphony, and I’m going to record it in Belgium in Surround Sound with a visual counterpart. It’s going to have a lot of instruments that are not typical for orchestral stuff – a combination of everything.
“I want to have something that goes between the extremes of beautiful to total chaos, like hellish apocalypse. I’d like to have a point to it that isn’t a story – to do with human things, emotions that I currently struggle with because I don’t find myself emotionally very intelligent.”
So that sounds pretty interesting, no? Man, what I wouldn’t give to throw on a tux and go see a Devin Townsend at Lincoln Center!
I also think this idea opens up all kinds of interesting possibilities. What other not-even-remotely-rock-based genres can Townsend dip his toe in? Personally, I’ve still got my fingers crossed that some day he makes a straight-up gangsta rap album.
