Tony Iommi Joins Fight to Save the Lives of Indonesian Metal Fan Drug Smugglers
You may recall that in January, Napalm Death vocalist Barney Greenway wrote an impassioned letter to Joko Widodo, president of Indonesia and avowed metalhead, asking him to spare the lives of two metal fans, Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran, who have been sentenced to death for drug smuggling. (It’s important to note that Greenway did not ask Widodo to let those fans off the hook for their crimes entirely — just that they not face capital punishment.)
Now Black Sabbath guitarist Tony Iommi has followed Greenway’s lead, writing a similar letter of his own to President Widodo. You can read a copy of that letter below (click to enlarge):
Widodo has yet to make a public response to Greenway and Iommi’s pleas for mercy, which makes sense, I suppose — it’s probably not good politics to let your constituents know you were swayed by the influence of musicians or celebrities in general. Or maybe he actually disagrees with Greenway and Iommi. Guess we’ll find out the hard way.
On a semi-related note… I wonder if all prominent metal musicians have their own letterhead, or is that unique to Iommi?
