Machine Head’s Robb Flynn Speaks Out on Selma, Racism, and Phil Labonte
Phil Labonte recently said that “the only people that have a legit grievance when it comes to any racial slurs is the black community,” and a lot of people (myself included) thought that was pretty dumb and took to our keyboards to say as much. Labonte, naturally, responded with the same argument every weak-minded conservative always falls back upon: “They’re attacking my freedom of speech!!!” Which is totally missing the point: Labonte can OF COURSE say whatever the hell he wants, but then the rest of us OF COURSE can call him a dope. In other words, Labonte claiming that his critics are attacking his free speech is really an attack on free speech. I dunno if Labonte is just too dumb to understand that or he legitimately doesn’t “get it.”
One dude who I know is both smart and “gets it” is Machine Head’s Robb Flynn. In the latest edition of his always-worth-reading The General Journals, he eloquently discusses the movie Selma (and how its getting its ass handed to it by American Sniper, which is both a jingoistic piece of propaganda and a tremendously boring, repetitive movie), the state of racism in the world today, and Labonte’s comments (spoiler alert: hope you weren’t looking forward to a Machine Head/All That Remains tour anytime soon). I implore you to read the entire piece below. Yes, he pays MetalSucks a compliment and we’re very flattered, but it would be a good read even if he never mentioned us. Here you go:
