“Mathematics of Defeat:” Get Proggy and Weird with Freak Kitchen

Freak KitchenGothenburg, Sweden’s Freak Kitchen have been a band for over 20 years and they’ve released seven full-length albums and an EP in that timespan. They’re popular enough that a fan — not the band themselves, but a fan! — was able to crowd-fund $140,000 to create an animated video set to their music. All of this — including the band’s mere existence — is news to me.

But now I feel like a complete dolt, because one listen to their new song “Mathematics of Defeat” and I’m hooked. They’re proggy and rocky and kinda metallish but not really — and incredibly good at their instruments, but very much song-focused over wank for wank’s sake– and frankly I’m surprised I never stumbled across their music when I dove headfirst into the catalogues of bands like King’s X, Event, Big Wreck and Biffy Clyro in the early to mid ’00s, back when clicking the “Related Artists” tab on AllMusic.com was the best way of discovering new bands.

Decibel has the exclusive stream of their new song “Mathematic of Defeat,” which comes from their new album Cooking with Pagans, out September 16 on Laser’s Edge. Stream it if you know what’s right for ya.
