Satriani-core: Polyphia’s New Jam “Sweet Tea” Defines a Genre
Heavy Blog is Heavy thinks there ought to be a name given to the budding genre of bands in the metalsphere that play instrumental (often), progressive, maj0r-key music. Bands like Intervals, Pomegranate Tiger, and today’s focus, Polyphia, who we’ve covered in the past. And I’m inclined to agree; it is quite a unique sound.
Heavy Blog thinks it ought to be called nu-prog, but I’m not feeling the “nu,” label; if it’s a reference to nu-metal, I’m not hearing the similarities — nu-metal was built on lowest common denominator everything, and Polyphia certainly aren’t that. I think Satriani-core is a much better label, for reasons that will become instantly apparent when you press play on their new track “Sweet Tea” below, not the least of which is that Satch was/is the KING of major-key instrumental guitar music. The track features Aaron Marshall of Intervals, by the way. Debut album Muse comes out on September 2nd and can be pre-ordered here.
