This is How Much Money Black Sabbath, Nine Inch Nails, Whitechapel, Within Temptation and More Earn at Shows

These Boxscore Reports attendance and earnings figures sure are fun to look at, aren’t they? In case you missed it, earlier this year we posted figures for Megadeth, Killswitch Engage, Behemoth and Avenged Sevenfold (among others) and then we posted figures for Guns N’ Roses, Volbeat, Black Label Society and Pelican (among others).

Since a lot of the action is currently happening at European festivals, the most recent Boxscore Report has numbers for a lot of those shows and gives us a bit of a different look into bands’ finances. For example: Within Temptation and Delain can draw nearly 7,000 people in Belgium?? Holy fuck. That tour might sell 1,000 tickets in the U/S.

I’m not quite clear on how it’s determined which shows appear in these listings. For example, that DevilDriver / Whitechapel tour definitely had higher-grossing nights than the Spokane, WA date listed below, including the show I saw in NYC, so why aren’t those listed above the Spokane date? Is it up to the venues to report these figures, and, as such, lazy venues/promoters aren’t sending in their reports? Or is some other factor at play?

Some important things to keep in mind as you scan these numbers:

• The show gross is not the dollar amount the band ends up walking away with; the venue and/or promoter takes a cut for themselves.
• The headlining act will also have to pay all of the opening acts on the tour out of their take.
• Each act also still has to pay crew, techs, merch guys, sound and light guys, etc. out of the gross.
• The dollar figures shown are from ticket sales only and do not include merch.
