Get Baptized by Baptists
Last month, my buddy Frank from Metal Injection turned me onto a band called Baptists; the Vancouver band’s full-length, Bushcraft, came out in 2013, and if I’d heard it in time, it would have been a serious contender for my year-end list. The album was produced by Kurt Ballou, which, in an odd way, tells you everything you need to know about it: Baptists make face-against-sandpaper raw, curb-stomp vicious, death-of-Joffrey-painful hard/grind/metalcore in the same vein as bands like Trap Them and Ballou’s own outfit, Converge. Everything about the band is A++++ WDBWA, but of particular note is drummer Nick Yacyshyn, who was recently praised by no less an authority than Dave Grohl as his “favorite new drummer by far.” Check out this live footage of the band to get a small taste of Yacyshyn fuckin’ shit up big time:
Pretty goddamned sweet, no?
So, terrific news: Frank now reports that the band recently completed recording their new album, which was once again recorded with Ballou at his God City Studios in Massachusetts. No word on what the album is called or when it’s coming out, but if it’s even half as good as Bushcraft, I have to imagine it’s gonna knock 2014 right on its ass.
We will, of course, keep you updated when we know more. In the meantime, if you haven’t heard it yet, revel in the glory that is Bushcraft below.
