Listen: Lord Mantis Unveils Second Jam From Upcoming Death Mask (NSFW)
It will be four more long weeks before the release of Lord Mantis’ Death Mask, but metal people aren’t exactly left to want for similarly grimy doom: Indian’s striking From All Purity has been keeping us occupied since its late January release (MetalSucks’ Sammy O’Hagar warns that it is “not for the faint of heart”), and arrived since then are sanity-threatening albums from Twilight, Coffinworm, Thou, and Pilgrim. It’s enough for trend-spotters to start calling 2014 the year of doom’s renaissance. Good call!
And so far, Lord Mantis shows all signs of being the Louis XIV of the new age of hideous. Before having shared one note of Death Mask, LM’s Charlie Fell got us pumped for a particularly hairy outing; then came “Body Choke,” our first peek at Mask and the pit of pissed-on garbage into which it plunged us. A month later — and, again, a month away from the big day — arrives “Negative Birth” (below, via Stereogum), another indicator that LM is peaking in a movement that itself is peaking. Slip on a hazmat suit and crank it up!
Pre-order Lord Mantis’ Death Mask here! It’s out April 29 via Profound Lore.
