The Best Cover of Guns N’ Roses’ “Sweet Child O’ Mine” That You Will Ever Hear
Over the years, we’ve heard Guns N’ Roses’ “Sweet Child O’ Mine” covered a plethora of artists, including Sheryl Crow, Belladonna, and a young woman on the Chinese guzheng. Some of those covers have been terrible, and some of them have actually been rather good. But this one, by Postmodern Jukebox (with an MVP-worthy guest performance by vocalist Miche Braden), is far and away my favorite. As their name suggests, Postmodern Jukebox take pop songs and cover them in different genres. Or, as founder/pianist Scott Bradlee puts it on the group’s webpage:
“My goal with Postmodern Jukebox is to get my audience to think of songs not as rigid, ephemeral objects, but like malleable globs of silly putty. Songs can be twisted, shaped, and altered without losing their identities–just as we grow, age, and expire without losing ours–and it is through this exploration that the gap between ‘high’ and ‘low’ art can be bridged most readily.”
In the case of GN’R’s classic, PJ have turned the tune into a jazz/big band ditty. That might gimmicky or even dumb, but it works INCREDIBLY well. Check it out:
Pretty rad, right?
