Jason Newsted and Dave Mustaine Considering Busting Out Metallica’s “Phantom Lord” for Gigantour?
Dave Mustaine and Jason Newsted were never in Metallica at the same time and have a combined eight co-writing credits with that band, and they’re both gonna be on this year’s Giantbour. So, of course, the logical thing for them to do would be to get on stage together and play a Metallica song.
Newsted said in a recent interview with Skulls N Bones:
“There is a chance that Mustaine and I will bust out some old Metallica that he’s a part of… There is a chance, it has been talked about. Whatever happens for sure, I don’t know [laughs], but I’m willing to throw down ‘Phantom Lord,’ actually whatever he calls it now.”
I assume the “Phantom Lord” crack is a reference to the fact that Mustaine recycled part of the song for Megadeth’s “This Was My Life”:

ANYWAY, this should be very exciting for people who don’t care that it’s actually a fairly random decision. Then again, listening to these two cover Metallica will still be better than anything Newsted plays during his own set, so whatever I guess.
You can watch the Skulls N Bones interview below — the bit about Metallica comes around the 8:23 mark. Dates for Gigantour are here.
