In many parts of the worlds oceans, except those deep-sea locations where the ocean is exceptionally deep, the Bathypelagic zone — 3300 to 13000 feet below the surface — extends all the way to the sea floor. No sunlight reaches this zone. There are no plants. Some species don’t even have eyes and many have transparent skin. At the top of the food chain in the Bathypelagic zone lives the viperfish:
