In The Midst of Life, Cerekloth are in Death
If the other young European death metal band about whom I raved today, The Modern Age Slavery, are a little too modern for your tastes, maybe Denmark’s Cerekloth will be more up your alley. Self-described purveyors of “eerie, sinister death metal,” Cerekloth’s sound is certainly less polished, more old school, and generally slower and doomier than that of TMAS — if no less massive and catchy. The band’s full-length debut, In the Midst of Life We are in Death (which follow two 7″s, Pandemonium Prayers and Halo of Syringes), is one of those albums which seems to come with a special bone magnet that will repel your finger from hitting the “stop” button. It’s just too tasty to turn off partway through.
Also, if you’re sick of me praising what we call “elephants marching riffs,” well tough titty, because holy crap, does this band write some killer elephants marching riffs. Real trampled-under-foot stuff.
You can check out two new Cerekloth tracks, “Born of the Void” and “Nest of Disease,” below. In the Midst of Life We are in Death comes out April 16 on Hells Headbangers. What is up with Europe’s hatred of apostrophes, by the way?
