WATCH THE ATLAS MOTH’S STUNNINGLY BEAUTIFUL NEW VIDEO AS YOU PONDER THEIR FUTURE
After seeing The Atlas Moth live at SXSW last month — my first time seeing them live since exactly two years prior, at SXSW 2010 — I’m convinced the sky is the limit for this band. Their music has just the right amount of crustiness, rawness and darkness for the hardcore/indie metal kids to love (Pitchfork, Brooklyn Vegan, etc), just enough heaviness/brutality for the METAL metal kids to love (us, Decibel, etc) and a measured amount of catchiness that inspires both of the above and everyone else to unite in arms over the band’s ridiculously good songs. Most importantly, they’re PHENOMENAL live — super duper tight, intense, fun to watch, precise, balanced, basically everything you hope for when you go see a band live whose albums you’ve been digging for a while.
The Atlas Moth have been making the rounds with smaller, more indie-metal focused tours for the past couple of years, but I’m positive that if they were placed on a bill with some of metal’s biggest names — Mastodon, Behemoth, Machine Head, really anyone — they’d go over swimmingly with the audience and be an instant hit. I really believe that The Atlas Moth could, if they want, become the next BIG band in metal. At which point their original indie-minded fans will ditch them on principle, of course!
Dwell on that as you watch the new Scion A/V-produced video for “Your Calm Waters,” from their recent album An Ache for the Distance.
On April 21st The Atlas Moth will release limited edition cassettes (wtf?) of their first EP, Pray For Tides, and of their One Amongst The Weed Fields covers EP (released digitally last year).
