LISTEN TO THE THIRD BEST SONG ON THE NEW DEVILDRIVER ALBUM
So, the new DevilDriver album. Beast. I’ve heard it. I’ve listened to it a few times. In fact, I’m listening to it right now.
I like it. The thing is, DevilDriver are a Slayer band, which is to say that the changes to their sound from album to album are relatively minimal, which is to say that the success or failure of their albums are generally based upon one relatively simple matter: how well-written the songs are. The songs on The Last Kind Words were awesome, so the album seemed awesome. The songs on Pray for Villains were kinda meh, so the album was kinda meh.
And the songs on Beast are pretty good… but not as good as the ones on Words. I don’t even like them quite as much as I did the ones on The Fury of Our Maker’s Hand. (I’m not really a fan of DD’s self-titled debut, so Beast definitely has that one beat hands down.) There are some really good songs on here, though — like the already-released “Dead to Rights,” and “Shitlist,” a song (with a really killer riff) which I imagine will never get released unless they change it to “Hitlist,” which would be lame (even though they actually rhyme “shitlist” with “hitlist” in the lyrics).
And my third favorite song on the album, “You Make Me Sick,” is now streaming. It’s heavy, it’s catchy, and, lyrically, Dez is at his least subtle. Headbang here:
And now share your opinion with the group.
Beast comes out February 22 on Roadrunner.
